You’ve probably heard white noise can be a good sleep aide for babies. Science is here to back that claim. And technology is here to deliver the best white noise for baby sleep.
Sleep is especially vital for babies
The National Sleep Foundation gives us some key information about babies and sleep:
- Sleep is the primary activity of the brain during early development.
- Babies’ circadian rhythms, or sleep-wake cycle, begin to develop for at about six weeks old. By three to six months, most infants have a regular sleep-wake cycle.
- By the time they turn two, most babies/toddlers have spent more time asleep than awake.
- Sleep is especially vital for babies, toddlers, and children as it directly impacts mental and physical development.
Infant sleep cycles
There are two sleep cycles humans go through. The first is non-rapid eye movement (NREM), or quiet, restorative sleep. The second is rapid eye movement (REM) or active, dreaming sleep.
During deep NREM sleep, our body restores itself, and in the case of infants, grows, in very important ways. It’s in deep NREM sleep that our bodies increase blood supply to the muscles, grow and repair tissue, and secrete essential hormones for growth and development.
Newborns spend half their sleep time in each of these states with a total sleep cycle time of 50 minutes. As they mature, the amount of time infants spend in REM sleep decreases. By six months old, REM sleep takes up around 30 percent of babies’ sleep time. By age three or four, children’s the sleep cycle time is 90 minutes.

An app inspired by white noise for baby sleep
As you’ve discovered, the best white noise for baby sleep can be found in even more advanced and soothing sound masking technology packaged in easy-to-download playlists. These playlists take the power of ordinary white noise to an exponential new sound masking level. Help ensure a peaceful, quiet, and snug environment for your little one to drift into dreamland … download Endel’s new sleep playlists, and check out the app version of Endel.
The Endel app is algorithm-powered. Its algorithm runs based on circadian rhythms, sound masking, and pentatonic music: the trifecta of natural, deep, uninterrupted sleep. Furthermore, Endel’s app personalizes the sleep sounds it generates based on location, time zone, and weather. For example, if you open Endel as you lay your little one in the crib on a clear, starlit night, the app detects the time and weather at your location and plays sleep sounds specifically reminiscent and resonant of a clear night.
