Research has also shown that music timed at 50 to 80 beats per minute can help put the mind at ease. These types of sounds are known to increase concentration levels, placing the brain in a productive mode where thinking and creativity become easier.

Dr. Emma Gray, a cognitive behavioral therapist, partnered with Spotify to better understand the benefits of certain types of music. She found that listening to music set within this exact range kicks the brain into an alpha state, which allows us to be more receptive and open. This state is associated with our imagination, memory, and intuition.

How do you know when you’ve moved into alpha state? You find yourself lost in thought and aren’t really listening to the music or sounds in your surroundings.

“Music activates both the left and right brain at the same time, and the activation of both hemispheres can maximize learning and improve memory,” explains Dr. Masha Godkin, a professor at Northcentral University.

7) Drink plenty of water and don’t reward yourself with too many sugary snacks or push yourself to study late into the night.

8) Take small breaks while hitting the books, especially if you’re feeling tired or frustrated. Pushing yourself too much may negatively impact your performance.
